Earlier Events 2008:

2008 Conference on Climate Change

Held in Llandudno Town Hall
on Wednesday November 12
th at 7:30 pm for 7:45 pm

Principal speaker:

Sir John Houghton FRS CBE,
co-chairman of the scientific working group of the
U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
.

Sir John was professor in atmospheric physics at the University of Oxford, former Chief Executive at the Met Office and founder of the Hadley Centre. He is the chairman of the John Ray Initiative, an organisation "connecting Environment, Science and Christianity", where he has compared the stewardship of the Earth, to the stewardship of the Garden of Eden by Adam and Eve. He is a founder member of the International Society for Science and Religion.

In 2003 Sir John wrote: “As a climate scientist who has worked on this issue for several decades …. the impacts of global warming are such that I have no hesitation in describing it as a "weapon of mass destruction".

He is at pains to emphasise that the working group considers fully the claimed non-CO2 explanations of climate change. In evidence to, the Select Committee on Science and Technology in 2000 he said that the group looks very hard at alternative explanations, and spend more time than they should on some of them, because they get so much publicity.

Sir John applies a Christian perspective to his views, to emphasise the need for long term thinking. He has said: “It is a problem that is well downstream; many of us will not be much affected ourselves but ….. It is our children and our grandchildren who will experience the impacts of climate change ….. Christians and other religious people believe that we've been put on the earth to look after it. We really need to take our responsibility as ‘gardeners' more seriously.”

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

January 18th to 25th 2008

1 Thessalonian s 5: 12a, 13b-18

But we appeal to you, brothers and sisters…
Be at peace among yourselves.
And we urge you, beloved to admonish the idlers,
encourage the faint-hearted, help the weak,
be patient with all of them.

always seek to do good to one another and to all.
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing,
give thanks in all circumstances;
for this is the will of God
in Christ Jesus for you.

Earlier Events 2007:

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

January 18th to 25th 2007

The week of Prayer for Christian Unity was initiated in 1908 by the Revd Paul Wattson, co-founder of the Society of the Atonement. Its observance has changed over the years, in accordance with developments in the ecumenical movement: the universal week of prayer advocated by Abbé Paul Couturier in Lyon, France in the 1930s; the formation of the World Council of Churches in 1948; the Second Vatican Council’s Decree on Ecumenism in 1964; and the formation of the Joint Working Group between the Pontifical Council for Christian Unity and the World Council of Churches.

A world observance, the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is an important expression of ecumenical activity at the local level. The theme and text for each year’s observance of the Week of Prayer are chosen and prepared by representatives of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and representatives of the World Council of Churches. Praying for unity does not involve prayer for any specific schemes for unity.  It is about being faithful to the prayer of Jesus Christ, as seen in Chapter 17 of St John’s Gospel: “That they may be one”.

The theme of our devotions for this year’s gatherings was chosen by the Churches in South Africa and is “Open our ears and loosen our tongues.” (Mark 7:31-37). Each daily service is in a different church and, except on Sunday and Tuesday, will last about half an hour. The dates and locations this year are as follows, weekdays at 10:30 am, Sunday at 6 pm.
